Will there be a sequel to Aladdin, the live-action film by Disney starring Will Smith? The last update on the project dates back to about a year ago.
More than four years after the release in theaters around the world of Aladdin, the live-action remake directed by Guy Ritchie of the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name, it is still not clear whether there will be a sequel. And to think that the film, starring Mena Massoud, Naomie Scott, and Will Smith as the Genie of the Lamp, performed well at the box office, grossing over a billion dollars globally, against a production budget of “only” 183 million dollars.
Will there be a sequel to Aladdin? Last updated in December 2023
On August 12, 2019, just a few months after the film was released in theaters worldwide, producer Dan Lin announced the development of Aladdin 2, which would have nothing to do with the animated films The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996). On December 15, 2023, during a promotional interview for the film The Sacrifice Game, star Mena Massoud said “I have no updates,” adding that the project could be stalled due to the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes.
“I know they were trying to get it off the ground, but I have no idea where it is. We shot it in 2017. It’s been six years since we shot it and wrapped it. For me, at some point, life just goes on. I’m sure they have their reasons,” he told ScreenRant. After another year, Disney has not shared any updates, so it is more than likely that Aladdin will not get a sequel.
