There is relief news for parents who are considering enrolling their children in private schools in Delhi. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered increasing the current income limit for admission in schools in the national capital under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per annum. The High Court has asked the government to amend it.

The Delhi High Court, while interpreting the law, said that the income criteria should match the standard of living of the intended beneficiaries of the scheme. The High Court's decision has come in the case of a person getting his son admitted to a prestigious Sanskriti school under the EWS category by fudging his birth and income certificates.

The bench dismissed the petition filed by the student challenging the cancellation of his admission by the school. However, the bench has allowed the child to continue studying there as a general-category student. The bench said that the student has been pursuing his studies since 2013 and is not at fault. The bench has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the student's father for getting his son admitted through illegal means.

The system of self-declaration of income should be abolished immediately

A bench of Justice Purushindra Kumar Kaurav directed the Delhi government to immediately end the system of self-declaration of income by parents. Create a proper framework to continue free seats for EWS. The order said the Directorate of Education (DOE) of the Delhi government will prepare a standard operating procedure for regular monitoring of income verification and eligibility criteria.

Let us tell you that this has been demanded by the parents for a long time, but till now no decision has been taken on this by the government or the Directorate of Education.
